Planting Guide

Japanese maples like rich soil that is moist and well-drained. Depending on your variety, most maples enjoy sun to partial shade. Sunlight will boost redness in any red leaf Japanese maple tree. Often times variegated trees need more protection from hot sun.

Dig your hole 12” to 24” wider than the root ball. Lift your tree from its’ container with care. Always handle your Japanese maple by the root ball. For Ball & Burlap trees, do not disturb the root ball, but cut away string and fold burlap away from the trunk. Once your tree is its’ hole, remove any remaining burlap.

The root ball should be completely moist or soaked prior to planting. You will want to add a soil conditioner or Bone meal to enhance your soil so that any air pockets are removed. Water in well!

In spring to early summer add a slow release fertilizer. In spring or fall prune off dead wood.
